Erdogan achieved victory in the referendum. He could remain in power until 2029

The majority of Turkish citizens, according to preliminary results, voted in a constitutional referendum for a radical expansion of the powers of the president and the transformation of the country from a parliamentary to a presidential republic.

According to the results of counting a quarter of the votes for the reform, more than 60 percent of the Turks voted against, about 35 percent voted against. The turnout in the referendum exceeded 80 percent.

Three-quarters of Turks living in Russia, according to Yeni Safak, voted against the constitutional reform. In Istanbul, the votes were distributed approximately equally.

Update. According to the results of counting 95 percent of the votes, 51.7 percent of the Turks supported the expansion of the powers of the president, while 48.6 percent opposed.

• The referendum was initiated by the current President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Given the results of the vote, he will be able to rule the country until 2029. In 2019, the next presidential elections will be held, his term of office is five years, one person has the right to hold this post for two consecutive terms. Erdogan's current term is reset to zero due to changes in legislation.
