Petersburg SKA became the owner of the Gagarin Cup, beating Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the final series. In the fifth match of the series, the St. Petersburg team won on foreign ice with a score of 5:3. The score in the series is 4:1 in favor of SKA.
SKA was losing during the match with a score of 0:2, but in the second period they managed to bounce back and take the lead. At the very beginning of the third period, the striker of the St. Petersburg team, Ilya Kovalchuk, made the score 4:2. In less than a minute, Metallurg won back one goal.
At the end of the match, Metallurg replaced the goalkeeper with the sixth field player. SKA forward Sergei Plotnikov scored the fifth goal into an empty net.
