Learn and help: how to protect the detainees in court

On March 26, hundreds of participants in the protest against corruption were detained throughout Russia. In Moscow, the police detained more than a thousand people. Most of the detainees are accused of administrative offenses under Article 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, they are threatened with significant cash fines. Several dozen were sentenced to arrests for a period of 2 to 15 days. Among the detainees are schoolchildren, students, random passers -by and those who face criminal liability on a number of articles.

For the full protection of the detainees in the courts, we need the help of savvy and professionally trained volunteers. Therefore, on April 26 at 19:00, the Human Rights Center “Memorial” together with the ATS-Info, the movement “Rus Sitting” and the Public Verdict Foundation will hold a practical seminar for lawyers to protect the right to freedom of assembly.

For three weeks in the Tver District Court of Moscow, about 500 administrative processes have already passed over the detainees on March 26. Ahead of another hundred cases in the district court, and then hundreds of proceedings in the Moscow City Court. This is a lot, and we cannot help detainees without the active participation of civil society: most detainees face the judicial system for the first time and need legal assistance.

There are about 600 processes ahead of the detainees on March 26, where defenders with appropriate practical and theoretical training will very much need. We invite lawyers and future lawyers studying in senior courses, lawyers, civil activists who want to participate in the legal protection of the detainees on March 26 in Moscow.

At the seminar, our lawyers and defenders who are conducting cases of detainees in national instances and the ECHR:

• They will talk about the actual course of ships under the detainees on March 26;
• They will share the practical experience of doing business in courts under Art. 20.2 and 19.3 Administrative Code;
• They will talk about strategies and prospects of appeal against administrative responsibility (Moscow City Court, ECHR);
• They will familiarize in detail with the procedural documents used (petitions, complaints to the Moscow City Court).

The seminar participants will have the opportunity to undergo practical training in tandem with experienced lawyers directly in preparation for litigation and participate in the process of protecting the detainees in court.
