BBC: the bill on deprivation of citizenship for terrorism was withdrawn from the State Duma by order of Volodin

The bill introducing amendments to deprive Russian citizenship for terrorist activities has been withdrawn from the State Duma, sources in the parliamentary apparatus told the BBC.

According to one of the BBC’s interlocutors, the bill was contrary to the Constitution, so “they came from [State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav] Volodin and ordered it to be removed urgently.” Now the bill card has been removed from the Duma database. “This is the first time I’ve seen this in 20 years,” said another interlocutor close to the leadership of the State Duma.

Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Igor Lebedev explained that the withdrawal of the bill is associated with an adjustment of the norms, but the meaning will remain the same: according to him, citizenship will not be deprived only of those who received it by birthright.

A bill proposing to deprive those convicted of “terrorist” and “extremist” articles of the Criminal Code of Russian citizenship was introduced by the leaders of the Duma factions of United Russia, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, the Liberal Democratic Party and A Just Russia the day before. Later, the head of the State Duma Committee on Legislation, Pavel Krasheninnikov , said that the bill would be adjusted for the second reading.
