50 years ago, on April 21, 1967, a group of Greek officers led by Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos carried out a military coup in the country, later called the coup of the "black colonels". The military came to power under the slogan of combating the "communist-anarchist" danger. All leading politicians, including Prime Minister Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, were arrested and placed in solitary confinement. King Constantine II recognized the junta as the legitimate government of Greece, expressing confidence that the organizers of the coup "acted to save the country."
