Fansy Bear hackers for two years read the correspondence of the Danish military

Hackers from the Fancy Bear group (APT 28, Sofacy) related to Russian GRU, for two years - 2015 and 2016 - had access to the correspondence of the employees of the Armed Forces of Denmark. It is reported by Berlingske with reference to the report of the country's computer security center of the country's military intelligence service.

The data intercepted by the hackers claimed were not secret. Nevertheless, the attacks represented a serious risk, as Russia could use the information received to blackmail the Danish military in order to force them to espionage. In addition, infected letters to other addresses could be sent from hacked mailboxes to obtain access to the contents of these accounts.

Defense Minister Denmark Klaus Yort Fredericksen said he was shocked by intelligence conclusions. “These are not some small hacker groups that are engaged in such jokes for the sake,” the official emphasized. “The group is associated with intelligence or central institutions of the Russian regime, and they are conducting a desperate struggle for survival.”

Fredericksen refused to clarify which divisions of the Danish army were attacked and whose boxes were hacked. He referred to the fact that this was confidential information. At the same time, the official emphasized that there were no access hackers to top secret data, in particular about weapons, since there is, in principle, this information is not in principle on the Internet.

It is also reported that hackers tried several times to hack computers and servers both the army and the Danish Foreign Ministry. However, these attempts were unsuccessful.

As stated in the report, attacks became possible due to the fact that the necessary measures of computer protection were not taken in a timely manner. However, now, Fredericksen assured, security measures are reinforced.

The head of the computer security center, Thomas Lund-Surence, noted that he regarded what happened as a sign of growing threat from Fancy Bear. Now, the intelligence officer noted, there is no serious risk of attacks on strategic infrastructure facilities, such as power plants and enterprises of the oil and gas industry. However, the situation may change in the future, Lund-Surensen concluded.

Fancy Bear is involved in many hacker attacks on the computer infrastructure of Western countries and international organizations. It was this group that hacked the computers of the National Committee of the Democratic Party of the United States. In addition, Fancy Bear made cyber attacks on government institutions and the media of Germany, France, the Netherlands. The same hackers tried to hack the OSCE website, and also successfully hacked the database of the World Anti -Doping Agency (WADA).
