
Three divers, among them two citizens of the Russian Federation, drowned on Saturday in the area of the island of Ahe in French Polynesia, RIA Novosti reports with reference to AFP.
The incident occurred during immersion in the cave to a depth of 60 meters. Three bodies were discovered on Sunday, so far they could not be lifted to the surface.
According to the agency, the dead citizens of the Russian Federation are a professor of mathematics at the University of French Polynesia Alexei Zykin and his wife Tatyana Makarova, who is about 30 years old. Together with them in the cave, the instructor - Gilles Dam, died.
“One of the divers could start panic, while the others wanted to help him, in this case the air is very quickly lost,” suggested the diving instructor who knew the dead.
An investigation of the causes of the incident has begun.
