Translator Sergei Ilyin died

On the night of Monday, April 24, Russian translator of English prose Sergei Ilyin died at the age of 68. Writer Georgy Elin reported this on Facebook.
On Wednesday, April 19, Ilyin was hospitalized at City Clinical Hospital No. 71 in Moscow with a massive stroke. According to Elin, the translator was in intensive care in serious condition.
Sergei Borisovich Ilyin was born in Saratov in 1948. He graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Saratov University with a degree in theoretical physics, then taught physics and astronomy and worked as a programmer at a closed research institute, and also defended his PhD in the field of physical and mathematical sciences. He began translating fiction in 1983 for his wife Elena, who could not read Vladimir Nabokov in English. The first book translated was the novel Pnin. Then Ilyin translated Pale Fire, Hell, or the Joy of Passion, Under the Sign of the Illegitimate and The Vane Sisters.
In addition, he translated books by Terence White, Mervyn Peake, Stephen Fry, Mark Twain, James Kelman, Anne Tyler, Martin Amis, Richard Ford, Sebastian Fox, Christopher Buckley and other writers. He also became one of the translators of the sixth and seventh books about Harry Potter - “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. In 1999, Ilyin became a laureate of the Znamya and Illuminator foundation awards.
