The reason for initiating the case was the comment posted on the VKontakte social network, expressing indignation at the ban on wearing hijabs in China. In the commentary, the Chinese Communists predicted "heavenly punishment".

The court decided that the security forces managed to prove that the author of the commentary was Yakupov, but the record contains an appeal to the Higher Forces, which cannot be regarded as the excitement of enmity.

After the sentence, the prosecutors said they would appeal the decision. During the court debate, the prosecution asked Yakupov to say to two years of conditional term. Former Imam stated that he was pleased with the verdict and, after his entry into legal force, would seek rehabilitation for illegal criminal prosecution.

Yakupov insisted that he did not post a comment, and his page in VKontakte was hacked. The defense claimed that the supporters of the former Imam Kurgan Zidali Mizrobov, with whom Yakupov had hostile relations could be involved in hacking

The persecution of Yakupov began in early 2016. Then the investigators came to his house with a search, during which they found a kind of “forbidden literature” from the former imam.

In 2013, Yakupov in the Penza region was already charged under Articles 282 and 280 of the Criminal Code (public calls for extremist activity), but in 2016 the case was terminated for the lack of corpus delicti.
