Ion Lazarevich Degen was born in 1925 in Mogilev-Podolsky. In July 1941, at 16, he volunteered to the front, fought in the infantry, then in intelligence. During the participation in hostilities, the crew of Jonah Degen destroyed 12 German tanks and 4 self -propelled guns, many guns, machine guns, mortars and enemy manpower.

He suffered burns and four injuries, as a result of the last of them in January 1945, he received disability, was twice presented to the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

After the war, he graduated from the Chernivtsi Medical Institute, worked as an orthopedist-traumatologist at the Kiev Orthopedic Institute, in 1959 he carried out the first limb replantation in medical practice-the forearm. Candidate (1965), Doctor (1973) of medical sciences, author of 90 scientific articles. In 1977 he was repatriated to Israel, where he continued to work as a orthopedic doctor.
