1992 Declaration of independence of Crimea

25 years ago, on May 5, 1992, the Crimean parliament adopted an act declaring the state independence of Crimea and announced a referendum on the status of the republic on August 2. The act contained a proposal addressed to the President and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the conclusion of a bilateral agreement between the Republic of Crimea and Ukraine. However, on May 13, the Verkhovna Rada instructed the Supreme Council of Crimea to cancel its resolutions, as contrary to the Constitution of Ukraine. In July, the Supreme Council canceled the act of state independence and imposed an indefinite moratorium on holding a nationwide referendum on independence in Crimea.
