Sergey Medvedev: We continue the excavations of the post -Soviet consciousness, and, taking off the layer by the layer, inevitably stumble upon images from Soviet cartoons, whether it be a dog from the cartoon “Once upon a time”, which many attach a car on the car with the inscription - “Sorry, if you,” or the heroes of the cartoon, “Dissections in Prostokvashino”, which became the Vostokwashino, which became advertised. dairy products. I'm not talking about such universal favorites as Kesha from "38 Parrots", Winnie the Pooh, a wolf from "Well, wait a minute!". In general, Russians live in the world (not only children, but also an adult), set by the heroes of Soviet animation. But what is happening today with the Russian animation? How many Soviet traditions are reproduced? About this in the plot of our correspondent Anastasia Tishchenk Fr.
Russian animation began with insects
Anastasia Tishchenko: Russian animation began with insects. In 1912, Vladislav Stenevich removed the cartoon "Beautiful Lukanida, or a war of barbeling with the horns." In it, beetles fight for the female, as in knightly novels.
Soviet animation has always been distinguished by the author’s style and often far from children's ideas, which was appreciated abroad. So the “hedgehog in the fog” of Yuri Norshtein, in which many invest different meaning, in 2003 recognized the best film of all time. Prestigious international awards received cartoons, close, it would seem, only to the Soviet man, for example, “Once upon a time, there was a dog with Ukrainian songs, the plasticine“ last year’s snow ”with a household plot fell. Puppet heroes Cheburashka and Crocodile Gene helped pioneers. Creativity for children was the main way to obtain funding.
In the 80s, the multiplier Alexander Tatarsky founded the pilot studio, where they create the famous animated series "Koloboks lead." Simplified drawings with rough strokes oriented, rather, on an adult audience, retained their special style. In the early 90s, part of the pilot’s team leaves for the United States. Other Soviet animators and other Soviet animators leave. The main reason is that they do not allocate money for their work.
Today, many Russian cartoons are made with an eye on Hollywood - bright characters, rapid development of events. This helps to enter the international market. The real Russian phenomenon was the cartoon "Masha and the Bear". But if in the first episodes Masha in a dress and a handkerchief, then in new clothes is less traditional, and on the New Year the girl waits for Santa Claus to come through a fireplace pipe.
Today, many Russian cartoons are made with an eye on Hollywood - bright characters, rapid development of events
But the author’s animated cinema, such as “Masyanya”, “Freeman”, “Mountain of Gems”, lives mainly as part of festivals and YouTube.
Sergey Medvedev: We are visiting a multiplier Dmitry Geller and the artistic director of the National Animation Prize "Icarus" Sergey Kapkov .
I recall that John Paul II, in my opinion (despite the fact that he himself was an anti-Soviet, a person who actually ruined the Eastern Bloc), said that it was necessary to raise children at Soviet cartoons, because they have a humanistic message. Is it really so? Was the Soviet animation island of humanism?
Sergei Kapkov: As far as I know, one of the papes of the Roman said this phrase after the “snow queen” conquered the festival in Venice, and this is the end of the 50s. Even then it was said that we must watch the most humane Soviet cartoons in the world. Then, since the name of this pope remained unknown, Soyuzmultfilm learned about this from someone who arrived, and then this quote was transmitted from mouth to mouth, from generation to generation.
It is amazing that after all, people who worked at Soyuzmultfilm in those years: all the main directors, artists, are all front -line soldiers, moreover, disabled. The two outstanding directors did not have a hand, the two had no eyes. Vinokurov, one of the artists-winners of the "Snow Queen" and "Golden Antelope", was without one eye. Boris Dezhkin, the only Soviet animator, whom Disney called to his studio, was also without one eye. There were people without legs. They fought and killed the whole war, and suddenly returned, began to look for themselves and found in animations, began to create the most humane cartoons in the world.
Sergey Medvedev: Maybe this is some kind of compensation? Or, perhaps, we are wrong, and the Soviet animation was not an island of humanity? Now, at least, it remains, or has everything passed into a commercial format?
Dmitry Geller: No, did not go into a commercial format. Children's films that are being made now continue to tradition. In a sense, perhaps, they continue in vain, because I want them to develop, look for some new language, and they repeat the beautiful thing that was.
Sergey Medvedev: In any case, this tradition was quite humane, even "well, wait a minute!" There was action, but there was no violence compared to the same Tom and Jerry.
Dmitry Geller: He was not as physiological as Tom and Jerry, but, in general, they also gone over to each other.
Sergey Medvedev: They chased, but did not destroy each other, as is the case in every episode of Tom and Jerry.
Dmitry Geller: Yes. Definitely, they were very humane and chaste. I even made a film dedicated to the Soyuzmultfilm - such a traditional puppet film. This is about a sparrow who holds his word. The script was written by the playwright Rosa Khasnutdinova, who worked at Soyuzmultfilm back in Soviet times. I chose such a classic plot, took dolls so that the film was directly Soviet, however, added mixed technology, which was previously technically impossible.
Sergey Medvedev: And the classic Soyuzmultfilm - puppet or drawn?
Many people who worked at Soyuzmultfilm are front -line soldiers, moreover, disabled
Sergei Kapkov: There was a department of drawn films and the separation of puppet and drawn ones simply in the number of quantities were more than puppet.
Sergey Medvedev: But the greatest achievements, victories at festivals were still, probably, in the drawn ones.
Sergey Kapkov: At the festivals there was a "mitten". This is a puppet cartoon, one of the most titled.
Dmitry Geller: "Cheburashka".
Sergey Kapkov: Cheburashka had fewer prizes, but its popularity was unlimited. And Norshtein films are considered voluminous animation, because these are shifting - pieces of paper, pieces of cardboard. So according to the prizes they are just approximately equal.
Sergey Medvedev: And the crocodile Gene went quite widely. This is actually like a Japanese Pokemon ...
Sergey Kapkov: That is why the Japanese took it to themselves. Moreover, it is very funny: in order to enter this unhurried Soyuzmultfilm rhythm to master their movements, to penetrate into the essence, into drama, they shot the first film one to one like ours, and then they began to make new adventures with these heroes.
Sergey Medvedev: I am now thinking about films of the 50s - these are Stalin's fairy tales. Is it like Disney? Do they seem to go in parallel with Disney animation?
Dmitry Geller: They were so long, 40 minutes. They tried to repeat many films. Many of these directors came because they once saw Disney's first films.
Sergey Medvedev: That is, it is approximately like Alexander comedies - they also made a Hollywood musical. Russian tales of the 50s reproduced Disney.
The popularity of "Cheburashka" was unlimited
Sergey Kapkov: At first - yes, there was a great influence. Therefore, Soyuzmultfilm at some point suddenly divided inside. Some continued to blindly follow Disney, while others began to say: "This is impossible, this is a dead end. We must look for our own, Soviet, Russian!" And they gradually moved away, began to make some kind of their face.
Sergey Kapkov
Then there was a revolution in the Soviet animation, which was arranged by Fedor Khitruk and sisters Brumberg, who were called grandmothers of Russian animation. So they simultaneously released films that broke everything. At the trick, it was a completely European, innovative "story of one crime." He was the first to use a polyescrane when several plots were shown on the screen at the same time and all the superfluous was removed. If Vasily Vasilievich runs along the steps, then not the entire entrance was drawn, but only lads. This has never happened before. And the sisters of Brumberg made the cartoon "Big troubles", where children's drawings came to life. And there was an adult text, satirical, poisonous, where "still from work, dad walks on eyebrows" was said by a childish voice on the face of her daughter, and everything she imagined was literally embodied in children's drawings. These films, of course, became events.
Sergey Medvedev: It seems to me that there was some very important shift in the 70s-80s-this is such a golden age of Soviet animation: "Well, wait a minute!", "Baby and Carlson."
Sergey Kapkov: I would say that in the 70s such a pop animation began. The Golden Age is called just the 60s, and in the early 70s, when pop authors came: Uspensky, Courland, Hait, Gamov-they began to do “Well, wait a minute!”, “Bremen musicians” went, musical animation. And in the 80s, decline was already going, worse and worse. Somewhere in the region of the mid-80s, perestroika began-it would seem, freedom, but for some reason everything began to develop for the worse. After the "Prostokvashino" at Soyuzmultfilm there was nothing more.
Sergey Medvedev: And the pilot studio?
Sergey Kapkov: Yes, the pilot appeared.
Sergey Medvedev: "Plasticine crow" ...
Animation began from Tatar no longer for children, but for adults - tough, modern
Sergey Kapkov: Author's animation comes here. Animation began with Tatar no longer for children, but for adults - tough, modern.
Sergey Medvedev: What was the target audience of Soviet animation - children or adults? Or do you remove such differences?
Dmitry Geller: When I make a film for children, I naturally think about children. And when the film is not for children, that is, I am free, I make this film for myself.
Sergey Medvedev: But is there a tough genre difference? For me, the secret, the magic of animation is that the border between children and adult cinema is very blurry. I am an adult, but it is incredibly interesting for me to watch children's animation precisely because it is somehow done otherwise. Or is the same Miyazaki - what, for children or for adults?
Dmitry Geller: For everyone.
Sergey Medvedev: Parents have always watched Soviet animation with their children. Now, for example, there is a children's movie. He planted a child with a tablet, and he looks. And then it was often a family view.
Sergey Kapkov: Then, in my opinion, they didn’t even separate it. It was simply clear that it was for children, and when (very rarely) cartoons appeared not for children, in the television program they stood under the hat "Cartoon for adults." Here is the "Once upon a time, there was a dog - this is a movie absolutely for everyone. And I doubt something very much that Eduard Nazarov thought for whom he is doing this movie. This is absolutely copyright cinema. He is the author of the script, director, acted there as an artist. It turned out like that.
Now, it seems to me that the animation that was in Soviet times has not yet returned. Now the production time, which harshly says: "We are doing for children." And when they say: “We are doing it for the whole family,” it turns out even worse. Well, it doesn’t work yet. And our authors, such as Dmitry Geller, most often make the author’s cinema - it is festival, it receives prizes, but it does not yet fall into the context in which Soyuzmultfilm worked - that now we will sit down and see this movie with the whole family. It is for everyone, it is childish. So far we are in some kind of borderline state, where everyone is a little confused. I want people to see the movie, and on the other hand, I want to somehow self-explode. And there is also a dictate of the producer.
Sergey Medvedev: And in Soviet times was there a dictate of the state? Was the animation a zone more free from ideological control?
The leadership paid no attention to the animation, so all prohibited authors gathered at Soyuzmultfilm
Sergey Kapkov: Of course, it was.
Sergey Medvedev: I recall pretty bold cartoons for adults of the 80s.
Sergei Kapkov: The leadership paid no attention to the animation, so Erdman, Volpin, Olesha gathered at Soyuzmultfilm - all the forbidden authors. They could work quite calmly there. The same artists - Stoster ... Gubaidulin and Schnita wrote music. It was an amazing place! The most stringent control was among their own colleagues - a artistic council. When they gathered and watched the film, they could get most of all from their own colleagues. The same Fedor Khitruk was rather cruel and truthfully in his assessments when others represented their films. And the "Bremen musicians" went to the full program. The studio generally said that you can’t do a movie like that, this is a real marriage - it is by embodiment, by characters, by installation, according to the plot.
Sergey Medvedev: And what, remade?
Sergey Kapkov: No, they redid it very rarely. But there was no such thing to shred, put on a shelf. They just received their own from colleagues, left offended, upset, and then the film was in cinemas.
Sergey Medvedev: The film "Bremen musicians" gathered a huge cash register. He got into the Rock Oper era.
Sergey Kapkov: Of course. And "Well, wait a minute!" The studio was not particularly accepted. The same Yuri Norshtein always said that he would pay tribute to Kotenochkin as a director, as a master, but "well, wait a minute!" This is something vulgar, low-grade, this is not an art. But at the same time, no one inserted the sticks into the wheels, no one sat down anyone.
Sergey Medvedev: It seems to me that this is quite idealistic, a story compared to those ideological battles that Soviet cinema withstanding. Look at the story of Tarkovsky and anyone. Against this background, the animation was some kind of oasis, on the one hand, humanity, and on the other hand, the lack of state dictatorship.
Soviet animation was an oasis, on the one hand, humanity, and on the other hand, the lack of state dictate
You can not bypass the story of the success of the largest Russian export product - the cartoon "Masha and the Bear". About this in the plot of our correspondent Anastasia Tishchenko.
Anastasia Tishchenko: We asked the young Mexicans, which attracts them so much by the Russian cartoon "Masha and the Bear". This is what they told us.
- I like the cartoon "Masha and the Bear". Masha is funny, funny and sweet. Sometimes she tells stories in which there is a little moral.
- Because this is not a very stupid gear. She is stupid, but still not very.
“I like her that funny.”
- It is fun, instructive. You are taught some things.
- I wake up in the morning and always watch "Masha and the Bear."
- There are more adventures in this cartoon than in others. Masha is funny.
- My sisters very often watch this cartoon. They really like it. He talks about different problems and how to solve them. They like Masha more than a bear. I don’t know where this cartoon was made - we have, in Mexico, or in the USA, but the children are delighted.
Sergey Medvedev: Why did the film "Masha and the Bear?" On some Russian archetypes?
Dmitry Geller: This film clearly stands out for how professionally it is made, how exactly it falls into the character of an absolutely instantly recognizable Masha in Mexico and anywhere. There is a good drama.
Sergey Medvedev: Sergey, is there such a thing that people peck at Russian plots? Here is a bear - a symbol of Russia, here is a girl in a handkerchief - a symbol of Russia ...
We still have no international commercial success, and we will have to wait for some more time
Sergey Kapkov: No. Please note: children do not even know where it was done - in Mexico or in the USA. They do not even combine a bear with Russia. This is a very professional work, even in terms of voice acting, in texts, where everything is very concise and capacious, each phrase is honed, and there are not many texts as in many other series, where the stream goes to you with crazy voices: everything is yelling, and you do not understand why all these texts. In animation, the smaller the text, the better.
Sergey Medvedev: What other successes can be called? I remember from the last film by Konstantin Bronzite "We cannot live without space." As I understand it, the director has a birthday on the day of astronautics, and for him this is a personal topic. But he, in my opinion, did not receive an Oscar - he was nominated, but did not receive.
Sergey Kapkov: Unfortunately, I have not yet received it yet, but I hope it will still receive it. It was already nominated twice.
Sergey Medvedev: Russian animation still remains more in a piece product in festival copyright cinema?
Sergey Kapkov: If you look at success, according to the prizes, then - yes, while we are gaining prizes more. Bronzite had 75 or 80 prizes for “Cosmos”, Kovalev now had the film “Before Love” also received 40 prizes. Anna Budanova has now received a prize at Ikar (the film "Among the Black Waves")-there are also an end of the Grand Prix. We have many prizes.
As for the rental ... Now in the Voronezh studio they are with full meters ("Snow Queen", "Wolves and Sheep") once entered the international market about the rental of films. This is probably so far the only thing that comes from Russia at the box office abroad. And from the series, this is mainly Masha and the Bear.
If we compare the scale of our country and the number of films that are made here, then we still do not have international commercial success, and we will have to wait for some more time.
What is happening there?
Mikhail Aldashin
