Tamara Lyalenkova : On the air "Born after the USSR", a program about what traditions youth inherit from the past and what awaits us in the future. You can listen to and see the discussion on the Radio Liberty website and on the TV channel present.
Today we will talk about the ways of living and playing the events of the Second World War. We will carefully consider the military-historical reconstruction of the actions of American soldiers in the second part of the program, and we will begin with the confrontation of the Soviet and German sides. In the Moscow studio, philosopher Elena Petrovskaya , student historian Higher School of Economics Irina Arkhangelskaya and my today's co -host, head of the department "Theory of Knowledge" of the Lyceum HSE Alexander Girinsky .
Irina, you are dealing with documents, you are dealing with just the period of the Great Patriotic War. As I understand it, these are just German soldiers.
Irina Arkhangelskaya : Yes.
Tamara Lyalenkova : It does not seem a little unethical to you - this is the game in the war that decided fate was a tragedy. Or is it still such a living story that is related to the documents with which the historian usually works?
Irina Arkhangelskaya : I can understand why people seek to do this. Because, probably, they want to experience the emotions that the soldiers experienced. This is a significant part of our history. Many people are very interesting. The current generation wants to feel, roughly speaking, in this skin. I don’t know if this is not serious about this, then there is nothing to worry about.
Alexander Girinsky : Elena, the very idea of reconstruction, its popularity today in Russia and in Europe in relation to the Second World War, is it a sublimation of some kind of injury, or is it just entertainment? Are these methods of entertainment or sublimation in Russia and in Germany, in your opinion?
Elena Petrovskaya : I would react to the words of Ira that this allows us to enter the skin and survive events. Of course not. Of course, this does not bring to any extent closer to the experience of those people. But it seems to me that the task that the reconstruction sets itself is different. I would compare this reconstruction with an extreme sport. If there is any fear, then this is a fear associated with participation in a dangerous enterprise, but in an enterprise with a knowingly prosperous outcome. Therefore, there is no need to do any comparison with the war here. This is the first.
The second is about injuries. I think that we have now entered in such a period ... And this is shown to us works of art, as it is not paradoxical. I mean the recent film of the Loznitsa, which is released. So, it turns out that injuries as such today are no longer in the sense that a generation dealing with historical events, of course, is so distant from them that the injury becomes an object, at best, of some speculation. But it is not experienced by today's generation. Those witnesses who experienced injuries, witnesses of the war itself, the participants in the events today are not with us. And this gap very clearly shows the film Loznitsa. This is not just a condemnation of tourists who come, to briefly talk about the content, to the places of once former concentration camps. This is a situation when a person with the same indifference is in any place where some excursion services offer him. But he is not to blame for this, because he is in another attitude to these events of the past. And this problem - can the war be part of our living experience today? This is an open question.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Nevertheless, the guys see the broadcast of the holiday that takes place on May 9 and, as a rule, recently it has become a fairly theatrical story. Everyone put on caps. We have a focus group, the class of Alexander Girinsky. The guys talked about the holiday.
- I love the holiday on May 9, although I do not know how patriotic it is for me. Rather, more family.
- It seems to me that the events of the Patriotic War, although they were not so long ago, are now a little divorced from reality. This is more such a historical event. People forget what really happened, that this is a tragic and serious incident. There are many historical stereotypes about this. It seems to me that we have a lot of events that are dedicated to some dates related to the Great Patriotic War. They evoke some kind of feeling of pseudopatriotism, divorced from real events. This is not very good.
- For me, this is more a festival of sorrow than the holiday of victory, if we take into account the number of victims that the USSR suffered during this war. Unfortunately, at the present moment, on a par with foreign policy in our country on May 9, is a cementing way, the image of the consolidation of the people. Because the government does not cope with the formation of the image of a successful future and cannot cope with domestic politics. Therefore, our government is looking for images in history. I believe that spending 86 million rubles only on acceleration of clouds on May 9 is wrong. I believe that to conduct expensive parades is also wrong.
- For me, the Great Patriotic War is a vivid indicator of the cohesion of the people, popular solidarity. If we do not celebrate May 9, it will simply become the date that will be written in the history of Russia. However, I must notice that every year the parades are becoming more indicative and magnificent. The Great Patriotic War has become some idealized symbol of war. And the loss of millions of people ... and this is celebrated as a holiday. Why is it?
Tamara Lyalenkova : Irina, why did you turn to this topic? You turned to the soldiers of the German army. When did you decide that you are interested?
Irina Arkhangelskaya : I have been doing the Second World War for many years. I was doing earlier a little different topic, but also related to the war. This year I decided to do the Wehrmacht soldiers, probably because it was very interesting for me to understand the essence of these people. We are used to dividing into white and black, there is an enemy, but we are the people who were unfairly attacked, relatively speaking. One way or another, these are all people. I was interested in understanding individuality. Probably war.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Have you watched something about Soviet soldiers before?
Irina Arkhangelskaya : No, I do not work with Soviet soldiers. Probably because in our country the Soviet soldiers, in principle, is more or less clear. But about the German, we somehow ... are used to considering them enemies and no one looks deeper. I was interested in this.
Alexander Girinsky : Children have interest in this topic, but interest is such a mythological and political. They are interested in how the image of victory is built.
Elena, it seems to you, how adequate today the line of building this mythology is with us? How much does it coincide with some world trends? What can it be connected with? After all, the war in the history of any country is some kind of nodal period in which you can build a certain mythology.
Elena Petrovskaya : Just not analogies, but differences. We have a very specific attitude to war now. It is due to the fact that society, having lost some image of the future, is completely and completely turned into a past. The past is our future. And the main event of this past-wounding is a war. And, of course, as your students rightly notice, this is a very ideologized image, from which everything that makes up the essence of the war is deducted. By the way, in art there was such a genre of "horror of war", known since ancient times.
It is amazing that the war is given simply as a kind of triumphal event, which is absolutely bloodless in the sense that in it, in this event, there is no this tragic terrible element, which is the content of the war. Therefore, this, of course, is already an object of ideological manipulations. And it is associated with some ideology of today. He tells us more about today's day and the dynamics of ideological discourse, if you want than the past, about the story that you are engaged in, turning to documents, etc. Because the documents, in fact, are not interested in anyone today. Today, all some people are interested in the generalized image of the past, where there are martyrs, where the greatness of the spirit is manifested, where there are mentors. This, by the way, is also superimposed on a religious worldview, which today is very actively planting in our country as a certain form of state ideology.
Therefore, all this leads to such aberrations of the perception of the past. And this, it seems to me, is our specificity. Take the parades on May 9! This is also a demonstration of military superiority, and not just a tribute to the dead or those who won the victory.
Tamara Lyalenkova : It seems to me here such a moment - a injury to Victory. Not wars, not of some difficult value experiences about losses, but this is some kind of national injury associated with victory. In the Patriot Park, the Reichstag is being built now so that "our Unarmeans can storm a specific object," said Sergey Shoigu.
Elena Petrovskaya : Storm?!
Tamara Lyalenkova : Yes, a specific object. A front line with trenches is created, a village with some living creatures, so that you can come, live, feel like a partisan. Although those who know the real story, how all this happened, are probably startled. The experiences are quite difficult, and it is unlikely to be recreated in this way. It turns out that the Soviet Union still continues to win.
Elena Petrovskaya : We live by the past ideologically, of course.
Tamara Lyalenkova : They still take the Reichstag, still.
Elena Petrovskaya : I don't think this is the capture of the Reichstag. I think that this is the solution of the current tasks with the help of the Reichstag, that is, this is an appeal to a certain system of images of the past, which are extrapolated to today's reality. It is no coincidence that you said - Shoigu. This is the Minister of Defense today! Look at these dugouts through the prism of our campaign in Syria. This is a combination of such times - that and that!
As for the proposal for services of this kind. This, of course, is the field of military-patriotic education of today, which, in fact, was known to my generation born in the USSR. I have in appearance, we also had all these military programs in schools.
Tamara Lyalenkova : "Zarnitsa".
Elena Petrovskaya : Initial military training - NVP. And here it is more in common with our school education and with this Soviet way of patriotism, late -Soviet, I mean than with the war. War is a material on which today's problems are played and solved.
Tamara Lyalenkova : On the other hand, it happens that society lives according to some of its internal laws. And with regard to reconstruction, it is quite clear that both sides should be represented. We talked with one of the reconstructors. He collects German clothes. In childhood, when they played in the yards, no one wanted to play for the German, it was somehow not good, now with great interest and pleasure.
Alexander Girinsky : On the one hand, war as a story about today, which has little to do with a real war and to history, and on the other hand, reconstructors that strive for authenticity. And they understand this authenticity literally - things, rags, etc. Reconstruction outside politics. And how to find a real history of war? It turns out to be some empty place between ideology and reconstruction and does not arise there or there. Where to find it?
Irina Arkhangelskaya : It seems to me that the real history of the war is that the soldiers thought at that time. Only through letters, despite censorship, through the diaries we can understand what actually happened in the heads of these people, how this war was carried out, how it was seen, etc. It is funny with the reconstructors. They take into account so many details, while they do not take into account hunger, lice, etc. They do not have a very clear attempt for me to completely join those conditions. In order for people to understand now how it was, how it happened, we can do this exclusively with an example of not even memories, but only reading letters, reading diaries. This is the main reason why I do this. I want to understand the actual picture of what is happening.
Elena Petrovskaya : This is the right reason. You are a professional in this area. But, I think that Sasha had in mind people who are not specialists in the field of military history.
Alexander Girinsky : How not to become either an ideologist or a reconstructor.
Elena Petrovskaya : There is one interesting point related to reconstructors. The fact that they are so attentive to all kinds of external details, just speaks of a very interesting change in attitude to historical time, which is noticeable, first of all, by cinema. This, in my opinion, is a reflection of modern cinema. Because in modern cinema, the image of time is transmitted through style. There is no feeling of time of any historical time, but you can indirectly indicate this historical time through stylistic fidelity to some period, for example, the period of the war. This is such a specific bypass path, bypassing the missing sense of history, to point out something that was once in the past. This is an interesting thing. And these details therefore play their identification role. They, as it were, are signs of reliability, that we are dealing with some historical material in some kind of approximation. This is entertaining. Because it doesn’t matter, in fact, we have it to do with him or not, since there is still no time of time.
But how to make the war part of the living experience? This is a difficult question. I believe that it’s hard to talk about injury today. Because injury is such an experience that just leaves a certain gaping, and it is not fulfilled with anything. When an injury occurs, we are not there. And this experience then overtakes us in psychoanalysis that these are symptoms, these are distorted images, etc. In the life of society, it can be something else, but it is a delayed, delayed effect when we talk about injury. Today we are already less and less talk about injury. This means that today we need to find some ways to embed in history or in this historical experience that would allow us to at least keep it as some actual representation, as what may be important to us today. And it seems to me that here we need to look for indirect paths. This is done by artists. This is done by documentaryists. I do not mean historical documentaries.
Tamara Lyalenkova : But the fact is that, indeed, the experience is very important for Russia. This is one of the few national ideas, which seems to unite, and you can string everything on it, stretching out such a historical chain. On the other hand, there is Germany's experience. How do they work out? It is clear that they have a different injury, but they still work it. They somehow evolve. We asked the Hudruna Wolff , who works in Russian-German society, as in Germany it all happens.
Gudrun Wolff : This topic is always present in society in our country. And in schools, in textbooks, this topic is always from the prospect of the culprit. And the research process continues. This is in the textbooks in question how it was possible. We asked not only our parents, but also our professors, where were they what they did during National Socialism? And these were changes in thinking in society, the beginning of change, we can say.
Two weeks ago, one journalist French wrote that he has been living in Germany for 20 years, and noticed that here museums, monuments that have been showing the past, that it is very necessary and important that Germany lives without lies. I believe that this is already part of our identity. I think this is very important. This is written in our textbooks that this is important so that this is not repeated.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Here is such an important story, moreover, it moves somehow. Now in Germany, Gudrun makes an exhibition for May holidays - and nothing. And in Moscow, this exhibition caused a not very good response.
Elena Petrovskaya : There is one very important point here. We are not talking about him, but he is very important. Denazification was carried out in Germany. This is a colossal event! When the state declared its attitude to the events of the war and formed a certain mindset in society, which is transmitted, fixed and transmitted using educational and academic practices.
We did not have teninization. We have a very specific attitude, the elusive attitude of the state in relation to Stalin. Stalin is a hero. And this duality is also transferred to the events of war. Because Stalin is now actually rehabilitated as a winner. As a result, we have very strange intertwined moments associated with our same past. Because you need to distinguish these things, we need to talk about the victims of both war and repression. And all this happened at about the same time.
Tamara Lyalenkova : And the post -war, which were connected directly with the war.
Elena Petrovskaya : Yes. As the winners were evicted from the streets of Moscow, if you use today's vocabulary.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Returning from captivity.
Elena Petrovskaya : I mean crippled people who spoiled the view of the city, etc. These are different stories, different past, as it is formed today.
Alexander Girinsky : It seems to me that our problem is largely that in Germany, in addition to denacing, a space was created for an academic discussion on this subject. We know the great disputes of conservative historians about who is really responsible for the Second World War, disputes about who began it - Bolshevism or Nazism, etc. These disputes in Germany are constantly resuming.
н. display.
I don't understand why they are doing this.
His death for them will be the same tragedy as my death for my relatives.
For the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941 and on December 5, 1945, the form is also different.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Why?
