1922 Arrest of Patriarch Tikhon

95 years ago, on May 9, 1922, Patriarch of All Rus' Tikhon (Vasily Belavin) was placed under house arrest in the former treasury chambers of the Donskoy Monastery, in complete isolation from the outside world. This happened due to the fact that the court issued a private ruling on bringing "citizen Belavin" to criminal responsibility for opposing the seizure of church valuables, which was carried out by the Soviet authorities, allegedly to help the starving. The patriarch was released only in June 1923, after he publicly repented of "misconduct against the state system."
