Rostelecom recognized the unsuccessful attempt to create the national search engine "Sputnik" and considers the opportunity to reorient it to other tasks. This was reported by Vedomosti with reference to sources close to the company.
As a satellite technical project took place, but did not gain popularity as a search engine, one of the sources noted. According to LiveInternet, the state search engine could not take even one percent of the market. In April, from the "satellite" to other Russian sites, they switched about 100.8 thousand times, while the Yandex and Google are calculated by billions.
According to Spark -Interfax, the revenue of the "satellite" in 2015 amounted to 136.6 million rubles, a loss - 150.5 million.
Completely close the project, which was positioned as a national search engine, "wrong," noted one of the sources of the publication. "Rostelecom" can reorient the "satellite" on tasks related to the calculation of big data.
The representative of Rostelecom Andrei Polyakov confirmed the newspaper that the development plans of the satellite are now being revised. "Corrects corresponding to reality" will be made, as it is necessary to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of the project.
As the former State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev told the publication, the idea to create a national search engine arose back in 2008, after the war in Georgia. "Information in the news sections of the search engines did not always correspond to the official, but had a great resonance: it became clear that the search engine can serve as a powerful media resource and be used as an aggregator of the news necessary for the state. The leaders of Yandex had questions from officials," the Vedomosti noted.
Now there are no such questions, a source familiar with the managers of Rostelecom said. “Yandex” adequately reflects the information picture of the day, so he is a national search engine, ”he said.
In May 2014, Rostelecom introduced the beta version of the State Search System "Sputnik" . The specialization of a new resource is stated - assistance to Russians in solving everyday problems, such as the search for the best prices for medicines, contacts of government agencies serving a particular house, or instructions for obtaining maternity capital.
The company assured that the development of the "satellite" was conducted from Rostelecom's own funds and did not cost Russian taxpayers a penny. The initial investment in the project amounted to $ 20 million, but it does not disclose the total investments in Rostelecom.
