1972 Self-immolation of Romas Kalanta

45 years ago, on May 14, 1972, 19-year-old Lithuanian Romas Kalanta set himself on fire in Kaunas in protest against the occupation and Russification of Lithuania. He shouted before his death: "Freedom to Lithuania!" In Kalanta's notebook he left an entry: "Only the system is to blame for my death."
