An exhibition of Soviet surrealism will be held in Moscow

On May 26, an exhibition-research-study “Surrealism in the country of the Bolsheviks” will open in the Gallery “On Shabolovka” of the Moscow Association “Exhibition Halls”.

The exhibition (curators-Alexander Selivanova and Nadezhda Plungyan) is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Oberiu (association of real art), which arose in Leningrad in 1927.

“The exhibition raises the question of the existence in unofficial Soviet art, graphic design and theater of the 1930s-1940s close to European surrealism in the anniversary for unification for the year,” the gallery website reports.

The exposition will present sculpture, painting, graphics, photographs of Moscow and Leningrad artists, close circles of Oberiu, students and like -minded people of Filonov and Malevich, artists of the Ost.

In addition to the graphics and painting of Pavel Zaltsman, Alexander Labas, Eduard Crimmer, Alice Porus, photographs and projects of Boris Smirnov and other artists, and the context will also be shown - books, magazines, films that existed outside the framework of socialistrealism, in a single space with the texts of Daniil Harms, Alexander Vvedensky, Konstantin Vaginov.

Most of the presented works come from private collections and archives of artists' families and is extremely rarely exhibited.

The exhibition "Surrealism in the country of the Bolsheviks" in Galey "On Shabolovka" will last until July 23. The grand opening will be held on May 25 at 19:00, the entrance to the exhibition on this day will be free.
