St. George's ribbon banned in Ukraine

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a law banning the use of the St. George ribbon. According to the UNIAN agency, 238 out of 338 deputies registered at the meeting voted for such a decision.

In accordance with the law, Article 173 will appear in the administrative code of Ukraine, which provides for fines and administrative arrest for public demonstration or wearing of the St. George ribbon or its image. It is forbidden to use the tape during public events, in the media and in works of art.

The law provides for exceptions for museums, as well as for veterans who have awards with the image of the St. George ribbon.

For the first violation of the law, a fine of up to 2,550 hryvnias (about five thousand rubles) is provided, for a second violation - up to 5,100 hryvnias (more than 10 thousand rubles) or 15 days of arrest.

Verkhovna Rada deputy Anton Gerashchenko said that the adoption of the law would contribute to "countering Russian aggression in Ukraine." According to him, the St. George ribbon is a symbol of such aggression.

“This law will counteract the attempts of Russian propaganda to split the Ukrainian nation, the Ukrainian people,” Gerashchenko said.
