1957 Khrushchev's meeting with writers

60 years ago, on May 19, 1957, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU Nikita Khrushchev and other party and state leaders met with participants in the plenum of the board of the Union of Soviet Writers. In his speech, Khrushchev said: "There would be no rebellion in Hungary if two or three bawlers had been imprisoned in a timely manner." He also attacked the participants in the almanac "Literary Moscow": "They wanted to arrange a 'Petofi circle' with us, and those who hit them on the hands acted quite correctly, in the state way."
