Megafon has experienced a subscriber database failure

The problems with communication in Megafon networks occurred due to a failure in the subscriber data storage. Unnamed employees of two operators told Vedomosti that the failure occurred in the HLR system. A Megafon representative refused to officially name the cause of the failure.

The newspaper's sources explained that due to this failure, even Megafon subscribers outside of Russia may have problems connecting to the network, since the system will not be able to identify them.

It is noted that in January 2016, problems in the HLR could have caused a large-scale failure in the Beeline networks.

• Communication problems appeared for Megafon subscribers in central Russia on the afternoon of May 19. Yota, a subsidiary of the operator, was also affected. At the time of writing, the failure had not been fixed.
• Megafon officially explained the failure as problems with network equipment.
