The Start project opens the season

From June 1 to July 2, the first exhibition of the new season of the Support for young artists Start will be held in the Center for Contemporary Art of Vinzavod.

In her debut personal project “Cafe of Dancing Lights”, the artist from Murmansk Daria Orlova explores the problem of loneliness in the modern world.

According to the description on the site “Start” , “Cafe of Dancing Lights” is a “unique dating club for single hearts (installation, Utopia project)”, designed to “eradicate the global problem of loneliness, giving a person lightness and freedom of choice, not limiting it in preferences.”

The name of the exposition was borrowed from Alla Pugacheva, who in the 1980s recorded the song “Cafe of Dancing Lights”.

“Appeal to the theme and aesthetics of the 1980s-1990s is a separate layer of modern Russian culture, reminiscent of nostalgia for the period of the“ thaw ”in the era of the Brezhnev stagnation. Nostalgia of people whose consciousness was formed just during the reign of Leonid Brezhnev. Young artists born in the USSR do not remember this state for real. Their conscious life began in another reality. But, nevertheless, they constantly turn to cultural codes and Soviet symbols, found "on the antresoli" of phantom memory. This phenomenon, including shown in the Daria Orlova project, ”says Vera Trachtenberg, curator of the Start project.
