The President of the International Football Federation (FIFA) Gianni Infantino sent letters to the heads of four football federations, in which he confirmed that the DPRK citizens who worked in terrifying conditions participated during the construction of Zenit-Arena. The British newspaper The Guardian got acquainted with the letter.
According to Infantino, the FIFA inspection, who visited the construction in November 2016, found “convincing evidence of the presence of North Korean workers at the construction site in St. Petersburg.”
“The discovered problems were subsequently discussed with the general contractor,” writes the head of FIFA.
At the same time, he noted that the inspection, which took place in March 2017, no longer revealed DPRK citizens on Zenit Arena.
The letter dated May 22 was a response to the request of football federations of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland. They wanted to find out what were the working conditions of workers at the stadium, which will accept the World Cup in 2018.
The functionaries reacted to the publication in the Norwegian Josimar magazine, which talked about the participation in the construction of the North Koreans living in warehouse containers behind the stadium. The publication reported that one of the DPRK citizens died in such a container from a heart attack.
