After the NATO and G7 summites, in which the first time President Donald Trump took part, the German Chancellor Merkel urged Europeans to rely only on their own forces.

“We, Europeans, must take our own fate in our own hands. Times, when we could completely rely on others, we have passed,” said the German Chancellor on Sunday, May 28, in Munich. She pointed out that her events of the last days pushed this conclusion.

DW notes that the Big Seven summit, held the day before in the town of Taormmin on the island of Sicily, almost ended in failure due to the confrontation course of the new US administration in a number of important issues. In particular, world leaders could not agree on a position on measures to combat global warming. In addition, contrary to expectations, world leaders did not agree on specific measures to combat hunger in Africa.

And at the preceding meeting, the G7 Summit, the head of the White House in an ultimatic uniform, demanded that the allies increase defense costs. Leaving Europe, he, in an interview with American soldiers on the Italian military base in Italy, noted that the allies had already begun to invest more in NATO than before.

Representatives of the Bundestag agree with Merkel. “What we observed on the summits did not correspond to either the intellectual or any other potential that we could expect from the United States and the president of this country,” said the foreign policy expert of the faction of the ruling bloc of the CDU/CSS, Jurgen Hardt, coordinating “transatlantic” connections. And the chairman of the “Left” faction Sarah Wagenknecht proposed to dissolve the Big Seven summit and send the released money to the aid of the starving children of Yemen.
