A member of the elite parachute group "Jumping Frogs" of the US Navy died on Sunday, May 28, during demonstrations at the festival in Jersey City, New Jersey. The soldier did not open the parachute and he fell into the water of the New York Bay.
According to Rear Admiral Jack Skombi, the parachute of one of the team members did not open correctly, and he landed on the water near Liberty Park. Coast guard and marines immediately evacuated the victim and delivered Jersey to the medical center. The paratrooper died an hour after the incident, the US Navy official website reports.
“Our hearts and prayers with his family, and I ask your prayers for the entire Brotherhood of the Marine Corps, which has lost the true patriot today,” the Rear Admiral called.
The department specified that the name of the soldier is not disclosed, since not all his loved ones are notified of the tragedy.
Videos appeared in social networks, which shows how the parachute falls on the parking lot near the coast of the bay. Apparently, after the parachute did not open, the paratrooper unfastened the ammunition. The official comments as the main version of the cause of the tragedy indicate a malfunction of the parachute system.
The incident occurred during the fleet week, which is held in the bay for the 29th time. This year, five US Navy ships, two coast guard boats, vessels of the Naval Academy, an expeditionary-oceanographic vessel, as well as almost four thousand American military sailors and naval infantrymen were involved in the events. By tradition, during the Navy Week, on the last Monday of May, the United States celebrates the day of commemoration of the fallen and missing during military companies, Reuters said.
