The country's adoption ceremony in the North Atlantic Alliance was held in Washington in the US State Department building. It was attended by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister of Montenegro Dushko Markovich, head of the country's Foreign Ministry Sdjan Darmanovich and US Department of Committee for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon.
Markovich called June 5 a "great day" for his country.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry, on the eve of the ceremony, announced the "next stream of misinformation and the hackneyed propaganda cliches against Russia from official Podgorica" as a manifestation "continuing in Montenegro anti -Russian hysteria."
“In the light of the hostile line of the Montenegrin authorities, the Russian side reserves the right to take retaliatory measures based on reciprocity,” they noted on Smolenskaya Square. “We state that the responsibility for the current situation lies entirely on the Chernogorsk side.”
TheAgreement of Montenegro ratified the agreement on the accession to NATO on April 28 . In the following weeks, the document was approved by all countries - members of the alliance.
Russia tried to disrupt this process. In October 2016, a coup d'etat was prevented in Montenegro, during which it was planned to kill the then Prime Minister Milo Dzhukanovich.
The Chernogorsk prosecutor's office accuses the Russian authorities of involvement in the crime. She issued a warrant of two agents of the Russian GRU - Eduard Shishmakov (pseudonym Shirokov) and Vladimir Popov.
On May 24, a court began in Montenegro in the case of an attempt by a pro -Russian coup in the country .
