Poll: The most popular classics among Russians are Pushkin, Tolstoy, Lermontov and Dostoevsky

Russians and Russian -speaking citizens living abroad, the most popular classics, according to the results of a survey of the All -Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM), are believed by Alexander Pushkin, Lev Tolstoy, Mikhail Lermontov and Fedor Dostoevsky. On Monday, June 5, said a member of the Russian Writers Union, the Secretary of International Affairs of the SCS (International Community of Writing Unions) Vladimir Thorin during the round table, which took place at the Krasnaya Square in Moscow.

According to Torin, who is quoted by TASS, Pushkin remains the most popular writer both among Russians and among Russian -speaking people living abroad. Of the Russian classic writers, among the respondents in Russia, he was recalled first 42%, among Russian -speaking citizens of other states, except the countries of the former USSR, - 38%.

The first lines of the rating of their favorite Russian classics were also occupied by Leo Tolstoy - the writer was called 27% of Russians and 35% of Russian -speaking foreigners, Mikhail Lermontov - 20% and 18%, respectively, Fedor Dostoevsky - 16% and 22%.

15% of the survey participants from Russia among the classics also called Sergei Yesenin, 10% were remembered abroad. Russian -speaking citizens abroad more often recalled Anton Chekhov (19%) than Russians (12%).

The VTsIOM study was conducted in the period from May 11 to May 13, 2017. The survey was attended by 1800 people.

Recall, from a study conducted last year, the Moscow House of the Book store, it turned out that Pushkin’s most popular works by Muscovites are children's fairy tales (31% of the total sales of all the poet’s works). In second place in popularity was the novel in the verses of Evgeny Onegin, which occupied 17% of sales, in the third - Pushkin’s poetic collections (11%). Among the prose works, the novel "The Captain's Daughter" (7%), the novel "Dubrovsky" and the Belkin Tale cycle, which were most popular, were most popular, the sales of which in bookstores of the network were 6%each.

Two years ago, Pushkin was in the first place among writers, whom the Russians called loved ones : 13%mentioned him. The Lev Tolstoy (6%), Fedor Dostoevsky (5%) and Mikhail Bulgakov (4%) followed him by a wide margin. 3% of Russians were then called the favorite writers Daria Dontsova, Sergey Yesenin, Mikhail Sholokhov, Anton Chekhov. 2% for Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Dumas, Nikolai Gogol, Boris Akunin, Valentina Pikul.
