The new Tor Browser 7.0 has been released
Tor announced the release of the first stable version of the new Tor Browser 7.0, focused on anonymity and security.
The Tor project team in its blog presented the release of a new version of its browser Tor Browser, more precisely, its first stable version in the 7.0 series. The new browser is already available for download both on the official Tor Project page and in the distribution directory .
In the new version, TorBrowser switched to using Firefox 52 ESR and contains a number of progressive changes:
First of all, enabling Mozilla's multi-processing mode (e10s is Firefox's multi-threading technology) and enabling sandbox content (a specially dedicated environment for the safe execution of computer programs) will be one of the main features of the new browser, both from a security and performance point of view. In addition to this, Linux and macOS users have the ability to further harden their Tor Browser through settings, using only the Unix Domain API to communicate with Tor.
Key improvements to anti-tracking and digital fingerprinting on the web include: requests for cookies and permissions to view source and API are now blocked to the first domain of the URL bar. This improves tracking protection. In addressing your fingerprinting, the Tor Project team has disabled or fixed several features, including WebGL2, WebAudio API, Social API, SpeechSynthesis and Touch API, as well as MediaError.message properties.
With the transition to ESR 52 comes new system requirements for Windows and macOS users: on Windows, Tor Browser 7.0 will no longer work on machines that do not support SSE2. On Apple computers, the minimum system requirement is now macOS X 10.9.
In addition to the new system requirements, Windows and macOS users may experience some problems with Tor Browser 7.0:
- Mozilla has stopped ALSA support in Firefox 52 for Linux users. This means that without PulseAudio, audio will be broken in Tor Browser 7.0 on Linux;
- The download button in the PDF viewer is currently not working correctly. To resolve this error, you need to right-click on the PDF file and select the “Save As” option.
- Tor Browser has recently become slow on some websites. This is due to a NoScript bug that will be resolved in a new version of NoScript fairly soon. If this does not happen, the Tor Project team will prepare workarounds in the planned Tor Browser 7.0.1, which will update Firefox to 52.2.0esr next week.
“In addition to migrating to the new Firefox ESR,” says the Tor Project team, “we have enabled the new stable version of Tor (0.3.0.7) and updated our versions of NoScript (5.0.5) and HTTPS-Everywhere (5.2.17).”
