The DPRK authorities liberated the 22-year-old American student Otto Wermbra, sentenced to 15 years of labor camps for "anti-state actions", CNN reports . The student is already on the way to the United States, but the state of health causes serious concerns.
According to the parents of Wermbra, the North Korean side informed them that their son, after a trial in March last year, was diagnosed with botulism. Later, as claimed in the DPRK, after taking a sleeping pill, Wormbir fell into a coma and has been continuing to remain in this state since then.
“We want the world to know how we and our son are abused and were terrorized by the Riga regime of North Korea. We are very grateful that he will finally be with people who love him,” the statement of Fred and Cindy Wormbir.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that he had made efforts to liberate Wermbra by order of President Donald Trump. Currently, the State Department continues to discuss with Pyongyan the liberation of three more US citizens, Tillerson noted.
On December 25, 2015, Wormbir arrived as part of a tourist group in the DPRK from Beijing. According to the Sevye Korean authorities, on January 1, 2016, he made his way into the office premises of the hotel intended for foreign tourists and tore off the Korean political poster posted there.
Wormbi was detained and accused of trying to "undermine the unity of the Korean people." On March 16, the court in Pyongyang sentenced him to 15 years in forced labor camps. At the trial, the American pleaded guilty. A video recording of the process was published, where Wormbir, sobbing, declares that he became "a victim of the US hostile policy towards the DPRK" and that "made the most serious mistake in his life."
Since 2009, over 10 US citizens were detained in North Korea on charges of various crimes, including against the state. Their fate became the subject of bargaining with Washington.
The last such case occurred in May. On May 6, the DPRK’s special services detained the American citizen Kim Hak Sona, according to the law on the “suspension of hostile actions against the country” Kim Hak Sleep worked at the University of Science and Technology. The previous detained American of Korean origin, 60-year-old Kim San Doc, whom the DPRK authorities were deprived of freedom in April , was an employee of the same university.
