US Senate approved sanctions against Russia for interfering in the elections

The US Senate with an overwhelming majority vote approved the bill on the introduction of new sanctions against Russia - for interfering with the 2016 American presidential campaign. Such information is transmitted by Reuters. The same document obliges the president of the country to coordinate any softening of sanctions with Congress.

The bill was adopted in 97 votes; Only two Republicans voted against - Mike Lee and Rand Paul.

Now the document must be approved by the House of Representatives. Voting there will pass, as expected, later on Wednesday or on Thursday.

Then the bill will take the signature to President Donald Trump. Supporters of the adoption of the document expect that if Trump puts a veto on him, there are enough votes in Congress to overcome this veto.

Last week, the media reported that in mid -March the US National Security Council sent a request to the State Department on the possibility of mitigating sanctions against the Russian oil industry. The diplomatic department opposed such a measure.
