On June 15, 2017, Open Recycle Bot , Telegram-Bot, designed to relieve separate collection of garbage, was launched in St. Petersburg, for those who are not familiar with the details of the process. In response to the photograph, the name or audio community, the bot advises about the possibilities of processing and finds the nearest point of reception of recyclables.
Separate collection is the process of waste work in which garbage is divided by type (glass, plastic, paper) for its processing and creating new things. In Russia, there is no separate collection system, and the civilian culture of the separation of waste is low. This is partly because there is no simple reference book on waste processing and information about the nearest reception points.
Recognition of waste photographs occurs using the technology of neural networks and so far works in beta-mode. Today, the network is trained to determine 8 different items-a glass bottle, an aluminum jar, a transparent PET bottle, a paper cup, wrinkled paper, a check tape, an egg cellulose box, a foil.
When recognizing, errors are possible, and the user can report this by pressing the corresponding button. The marked image will be used to further improve the algorithm. As a result of training, the number of recognized subjects will grow.
The Open Recycle Bot hypothesis is that a simple bot-companion addressing a neural network of processing facilities will solve both problems: 1) finding information on processing and 2) finding the nearest processing place.
More than 20 people took part in the development of the application, including eco -activists and volunteers. The main authors of the project were developers from St. Petersburg Vitaly Esipov , Andrei Demakov and Vadim Eskard . The idea of the application was presented in St. Petersburg in March 2017 at the Hakaton Big and Open Data Hackathon .
Based on the idea, a team that won and received support for the greenhouse of social technologies to finalize the idea was formed right on Hakaton. The authors received the necessary data on processing points from the RecycleMap.ru website (Greenpeace Russia project) and a separate collection from movement.
The service has an open source code. The authors invite specialists in neural networks and the processing of garbage to cooperation.
The project code is posted on GitHub .
