In the series of “Apography”, Soviet photographs of the second half of the 20th century were taken into “poor” salaries: instead of gold and silver, metallized gouache, instead of stones and grains - rhinestones for children's crafts and cheap beads. For the author, this project is tightly connected not only with the now huge process of rethinking old and building new narratives about Soviet reality, but also with that category of everyday, private history, in which people cannot be determined as “bad” or “good”, but only as alive.
In addition, the “apographs” for the author are tightly connected with the history of the imaginary Soviet city of Tukhachevsk and the Petrovsky family living in it. Tukhachevsk is located on the site of St. Petersburg in the absence of St. Petersburg. This millionaire city was founded in 1947 and was considered “closed” until 1993 due to the activities of the Tokhachevsky experienced algae processing plant, where more than 80% of the city’s population worked. The geographical proximity to Europe, the fifty -year -old existence as a closed research object of state significance, the complexity of natural conditions and a high educational qualification at one time made Tukhachevsk a city in which, according to A. Tiiyanov, “culture survived exclusively due to its ability to reproduce by division”. In the post -Soviet period, Tukhachevsk gained certain fame thanks to the two loud plots connected among themselves. One plot is the “Tukhachevsky Prince” case: in the mid -eighties in two parks of the city, the bodies of several “sleeping beauties” were discovered - young women strangled and laid down to “sleep” in a bed carefully spread on the grass. Another plot, which secured the name of the city in the mass consciousness, is often mentioned in the memoir and historical literature “Tukhachevskaya Paper Church”: a group of approximately thirty people, united by a non-grouped young historian, an asset priest Sergey Quadratov and adhering the ideas of a peculiar liberal Christianity.
A number of underground Tukhachev’s artists, writers, poets and musicians considered themselves parishioners of the Paper Church, named so due to the fact that its followers did not revere or kept traditional icons. This was partly done in order to reduce the risk of persecution, if objects of a religious cult are found in their homes, and partly due to the conviction of Quadratov in the danger of "everything that is able to encourage the believer to empty rituals and seduce his not lived, not missed through his own consciousness with an aesthetic attractiveness." At the same time, the squares and his followers were deeply believed in the importance of creativity inspired by religious experience and religious thought. As a result, the group members actively created images and objects, one way or another related to faith. Most often, these works were created on paper and from paper, because of which Friends and followers of Kvadratov began to joke in a joke to their group of paper church (and Kavadatova-paper bishop). This name was fixed and gradually lost its original ironic hue.
One of the active parishioners of the Paper Church and a close friend of Quadratov was the mathematician Yakov Petrovsky [*] , arrested in the early stages of the investigation and considered for several months the main suspect in the “case of the Tukhachevsky prince”. However, there were no sufficient evidence against him, and after the next (and last) murder, the victim of which was Mara Ladysheva, the daughter of another parishioner of the paper church, Petrovsky was released. Immediately after this American human rights organization Justice for Freedom managed to achieve Petrovsky’s departure abroad. Petrovsky settled in the state of Wisconsin; His interviews and essays became one of the first media materials about the paper church. At the same time, the murder of Ladysheva was very struck in the square group, the creative and personal ties of the parishioners began to weaken and break up. By the beginning of perestroika, the Paper Church actually ceased to exist. The “Case of the Tukhachevsky Prince” is still considered unsolved and is surrounded by something like a provincial cult among amateur detectives and occultists living both in Tukhachevsk and beyond.
Among the works of Petrovsky for the Paper Church, made in the late Soviet and post -Soviet period, “apographs”, “a number of minor events and phenomena”, “pencil icons and others”. The real author of these works sincerely believes that without the help of Jacob Petrovsky, they would never be born.
[*] In particular, Yakov Petrovsky is the brother of Sergei Petrovsky, the imaginary author of the book “Oral Folk Creativity of the inhabitants of the M1 sector”, in which the folklore of the inhabitants of one of the zones of hell was collected. The eldest daughter of Sergei - Agatha - the main character of children's books “Agatha Returns home” and “Agatha looks up”.
