Hacker attacks on the US election system were carried out at the direct instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is stated in written testimony to Congress of the former head of the US Department of National Security Jen Johnson, CNN reports .

"In 2016, the Russian government, by order of Vladimir Putin, organized an attack on our nation in order to influence our elections is easy and simple. Now the key question is for the president and Congress - what are we doing to protect the American people and democracy from such things in the future?" The ex -minister said in the testimony.

On Wednesday, Johnson will speak on the issue of Russian cyberats in the Intelligence Committee of the House of Representatives.

In his written testimony, Johnson notes that he repeatedly made public statements about the need to draw attention to the problem of security of the country's electoral system after he learned about Russian cyber attacks. Also, Johnson emphasizes, he unsuccessfully tried to achieve recognition of the state system of counting the votes of a critical government infrastructure, to make the issue of its safety a priority.

However, according to the official, his proposals met serious opposition from some officials who considered that Johnson decided to transfer the electoral system to the full control of the federal government. He had to abandon his initiatives.

As noted, until recently, the question of the direct intervention of Russia in the electoral system in the investigation of the Congress was paid to minimal attention. In his statements, the head of the reconnaissance departments of the administrations of the former President Barack Obama and the present Donald Trump repeatedly emphasized that the results of the vote as a result of Russian cyber attacks were not distorted.

Another attempt by Russia to intervene in the American electoral system became known from the reality, which worked under the contract with the NSA, which the American Ministry of Justice announced the charges of a leak of secret data on June 6.
