Four police officers have been charged in connection with the deaths of 96 people at Hillsborough Stadium in 1989

Six people were charged in the UK on June 28 in the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium stampede that killed 96 people.

Former Chief Superintendent of Police South Yorkshire David Duckenfield, who gave the order to let latecomers into the already packed stands, was charged with manslaughter of 95 people.

As explained by the Crown Prosecutor's Service, the law does not allow Duckenfield to be held responsible for the death of the 96th person, who died almost four years after the incident.

Lawyer Peter Metcalfe, former Chief Superintendent Donald Denton and his subordinate Alan Foster are charged with obstruction of justice for changing police statements about what happened during previous trials.

Charges have also been filed against former South Yorkshire and Merseyside Chief Constable Norman Bettison and Graeme Henry Mackrell, who was in charge of security at the Sheffield Wednesday club.

All of the defendants, except Duckenfield, will appear in court on August 9. In order to initiate proceedings against him, the prosecution would need to overturn the judge's 1999 decision, which considered a private prosecution against the policeman and forbade him to be prosecuted again.

• The stampede at Hillsborough Stadium, which left 96 people dead and around 400 injured, took place on 15 April 1989 during the FA Cup semi-final between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool. This happened due to the fact that the police sent two thousand late fans to the full stands, limited by metal bars.
• In 2016, a new judicial inquiry into the cause of death of 96 victims was completed. The jury concluded that erroneous actions by the police led to the deaths.
