On July 1, 2017, the Italian police arrested the military personnel of the National Guard of Ukraine Vitaly Markiva on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Italian journalist Andrea Rockkelli and Russian human rights activist and journalist Andrei Mironov.

Rockkels and Mironov were killed on May 25, 2014 as a result of mortar shelling near Slavyansk.
Marquit (ethnic Ukrainian with Italian roots) joined the Volunteer Battalion of the National Guard in 2014 after the Euro -Maidan, in which he took an active part.

Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yevgeny Yenin has already stated that his department was “surprised by the arrest in Italy of the Ukrainian soldier Vitaly, on suspicion of the murder of a photorepector Andrea Rockelli near the city of Slavyansk in May 2014, nominated by the prosecutor's office of the city of Pavia.” Enin noted that the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office collaborates with the Italian police in the shelling investigation, as a result of which journalists died.
The official position of the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office is that mortar shelling was carried out by separatists. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine has already applied to the Italian authorities with the request to “provide thorough evidence of guilt” by Vitaly Markiv or “immediately free it”.
New Gazeta contacted the father of the deceased journalist, Rino Rockkeli.

- Everything I know, I know from the Italian police. In Italy, the investigation is in contact with me. Now I can definitely confirm: this person, Vitaly Marquiv, knows a lot, the investigation works with him now. Markiv has many relatives in Italy, he was arrested here. It is known that he served in the Ukrainian army as a volunteer. We all understand that he was not involved in the shelling in the shelling. I do not contact Ukraine with Ukraine, I have no official status in connection with what happened there. All I can say was Italy an investigation. And I am inclined to trust him more as independent than if he was fulfilled by one of the parties to the military conflict.
Sources of Novaya Gazeta confirm that Vitaly Marquiv was in Karachun at the time of shelling, but they pay attention to the fact that there were no mortars in the service of the National Guard. The position on Mount Karachun was held by the 95th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
