In 1978, Glazunov wrote a huge canvas "Mystery of the XX century", at which he presented key events of the century. In perestroika, the picture caused a lot of controversy. In 1988, another huge canvas appeared - "Great Russia" - dedicated to the history and culture of the country over the past 1000 years.
Glazunov declared himself about himself as a monarchist and supporter of class public division. He opposed democracy.
In 1987, he founded in Moscow the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and remained its rector until the end of his life.

In 2012, Glazunov was a trustee of Putin as a presidential candidate.
