The cancellation of the Nureyev ballet staged by Kirill Serebrennikov at the Bolshoi Theater was preceded by a conversation between the general director of the theater, Vladimir Urin, and the Minister of Culture, Vladimir Medinsky. This is reported by RBC according to a representative of the press service of the ministry.

Earlier, a TASS message appeared, citing a “source close to the Ministry of Culture” that the premiere of the ballet, staged by Serebrennikov, was postponed on the personal order of Medinsky, who saw in the production “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations.”

The premiere was supposed to take place on July 11, but on July 8 it became known that it was postponed indefinitely. Urin then explained this decision by the fact that the performance was not ready.

The general director of the Bolshoi Theater denied the TASS report about Medinsky's order, saying that "there was no such call, no instructions were given," reports RBC . The department acknowledged the fact of the conversation, but stated that censorship and prohibitions are not their style of work and that they "do not interfere in the issues of the repertoire policy of subordinate institutions."

On May 23, Serebrennikov was summoned for questioning as a witness in a fraud case: according to investigators, the money allocated by the budget for the Platform project was stolen. Later, Nina Maslyayeva and Alexei Malobrodsky, the former director of the Gogol Center run by Serebrennikov, were arrested in this case. The former CEO of the Seventh Studio, Yuri Itin, was placed under house arrest.
