Today in Moscow, the Fourth International Quantum Technology Conference (ICQT 2017) is ending. One of the scientists invited to her was John Martinis, a professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara and the Google project manager to create a quantum computer. Martinis has been engaged in quantum computers for almost 40 years, it is he who is considered the main contender to finally create the computing machine of the future. It’s not long to wait - the Martinis group plans to conduct a decisive experiment to demonstrate “quantum superiority” by the end of this year. But several players are trying to overtake the Google laboratory at once, including the Russian Quantum Center. Scientific journalist Ivan Shunin at the request of Republic listened to the lecture of Martinis, after which he asked him a few questions - what humanity will do with a quantum computer, who, in his opinion, became closest to its creation and what threats the quantum project pose.
