The ex-prisoner who spoke about torture in the Kirov colony received two years for false denunciation

Galkin was convicted several times and spent 17 years in prison. In March 2016, he wrote a statement to the Investigative Committee about torture in the colony, and in May of the same year he learned that he had become involved in a case of false denunciation. In January 2017, the man was released from prison and turned to the human rights organization “For Human Rights” for help.

In an interview with the publication “7x7”, he recalled that the colony staff beat the convicts, forced them to run along the corridors and put them on stretch marks. While in the colony, Galkin complained about bullying to various authorities, for which the colony management and other prisoners put pressure on him.

According to Galkin, after another beating, two of his ribs began to rot, which later had to be removed. The former prisoner said that the head of the operational unit in the colony, Major Kovrov, hit him in the face several times when, before his release, Galkin complained about the decision of the medical commission, which declared him completely healthy.

Lawyer Pyotr Kuryanov told the Kommersant newspaper that the investigator instructed the FSIN employees to carry out investigative actions on Galkin’s complaint. They, in turn, decided that the prisoner “fell from the horizontal bar.” Galkin was refused to initiate a case of torture; he was accused of false denunciation. Due to treatment, the man did not come to court twice, so the judge arrested him at the request of the victim.

Human rights activists intend to appeal Galkin’s sentence in the case of false denunciation. Lawyer Kuryanov noted that a similar case is being considered in the Kirov region, brought against a prisoner from IK-6, Eduard Gorbunov, who spoke about rape with a soldering iron and a stick.
