The introduction of new US sanctions against Russia can turn into response measures from the European Union, writes Financial Times . This is stated in the official note prepared for a meeting of the European Commission, which will be held on Wednesday, July 25, the day after the vote on the issue of sanctions in the House of US representatives.
In Brussels, they fear that as a result of the introduction of sanctions that are now being discussed in the congress, European energy or other companies may suffer, which legally, in accordance with the EU measures, maintain business relations with the Russian Federation.
In this regard, the EU wants to receive from the US Presidential Administration Donald Trump "Public or Writing Assusions" on the non -use of new sanctions that will affect the EU interests.
Otherwise, Brussels is ready to respond to US actions. In particular, the note outlines the following possible options for actions: "The application of European laws to prevent the US measures to be recognized or have a lawsuit" in Europe, and the preparation of "response measures relevant to the WTO rules."
Brussels "should be prepared to take measures after a few days" after the adoption of American sanctions, the document stated in the article translated by the Inopressa website.
The bill on additional sanctions against Russia was published by the US Congress recently. The document, in particular, proposes to reduce the maximum deadline for market financing of Russian banks under sanctions, up to 14 days, and the altogether companies of the oil and gas sector - up to 30 days.
It is expected that the US president will be able to impose sanctions on persons who intend to invest more than five million dollars in a year or a million dollars at a time in the construction of Russian export pipelines or are going to provide services, technologies or provide information support to projects.
Separately, the sanctions indicate that the United States will continue to counteract the construction of the Northern Stream - 2 gas pipeline due to the “harmful effects on the energy security of the European Union, the gas development of the market in Central and Eastern Europe and energy reforms in Ukraine”.
Earlier, the EU has already expressed concern in connection with the bill. The EU believes that Washington's excessive independence in this matter can lead to "wide unforeseen consequences."
In addition to the EU, some American companies previously opposed the bill on anti -Russian sanctions. Thus, representatives of the oil business in the United States warned that new sanctions against the Russian Federation could have “unintentional consequences”, including negatively affecting the number of jobs in the United States and oil and gas projects around the world.
The presidents of Russia and the USA tried to avoid the extensions of the sanctions, notes The New York Times (translation by Inopressa ). According to the publication, if the Congress approves the document this week, Trump has no choice but to sign it, which will mean that both world leaders overestimated their capabilities.
The expert interviewed by the publication explained that the influence of new sanctions on the Russian economy will become clear in a year or more. And although the new US restrictive measures are “much weaker” the previous ones, they will not facilitate the hardships of Moscow. In addition, new sanctions will even more harm the perception of Russian prospects and limit Western investments so necessary for Russia, "reminding investors about Russian risks" and causing counter -sanctions by Moscow.
