A graduate of Fiztekh of 1954, for several years he was engaged in the experimental and theoretical aerodynamics of missiles “Air - Air”, “Earth - Air”. Then, from 1960 to 1992, he worked at the Moscow Aviation Institute, where he went from assistant professor to the rector. In perestroika, one of the organizers of the interregional deputy group of the Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR. From 1991 to 1998 - Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Ambassador of Russia to France.

As noted on the website of the Russian Paguosh Committee, the chairman of which he was, Yu. A. Ryzhov, “made a great contribution to the development of aerodynamics of ultra -large speeds, dynamics of discharged gas, the theory of interaction of atomic particles with the surface and nonequilibrium processes in the gas stream, the theory of non -stationary heat transfer” . In October 2002, he became one of the organizers, and then the chairman of the Public Committee for the Protection of Scientists , who tried to confront the campaign of “spy processes” . In 2008–2011 - chairman of the jury of the literary prize "Enlightener" . In 2016, he was awarded the Prize of the Moscow Helsinki Group for historical contribution to human rights and to human rights movement.

Academician Yuri Alekseevich Ryzhov was not just an outstanding practitioner of the aerospace industry. Not just a beautiful rector of MAI. And not just a serious politician, a deputy of an incredible first congress, a man to whom Yeltsin proposed to head the government three times - and received a refusal three times, because everyone should do their own business. And not just a major diplomat, the ambassador of free Russia to the republican France. He was more than an academician, rector, politician or ambassador. He was a great enlightener. The enlightener of the minds, the enlightener of consciousness in the impending darkness. For our award - the honor and happiness that he became the first chairman of the jury and shared a part of his undoubted charisma with him. On everything that the "Enlightener" does and will do, lies the glue of his glorious, bright name.
