1987 Disaster at Kamenskaya station

Thirty years ago, on August 7, 1987, two trains crashed at the Kamenskaya station in the Rostov region. It was one of the largest railway disasters in the history of the USSR and Russia.

A heavy freight train, due to brake failure, was unable to slow down on a steep slope and, having accelerated to a considerable speed, drove into Kamenskaya station. When following the station, the train disengaged into several parts. At the same time, the detached locomotive with one car drove a few hundred meters more and collided with the tail of a passenger train that was standing at that time at the platform.

As a result of the disaster, a freight train and several passenger cars were completely destroyed. 106 people were killed and 114 people were injured. Two freight train wagon inspectors were found guilty of failing to properly check the brake system. They were given 12 years in prison.
