An anti-migrant ship broke down in the Mediterranean. Activists who rescue migrants were sent to help him
The ship of the German organization Sea-Eye, which is engaged in rescuing refugees in the Mediterranean, went to the aid of the Sea Star ship, which is carrying activists of the ultra-right movement Generation Identity, who call their goal "to protect Europe" from refugees.
According to Sea-Eye executives, Sea-Star needed help due to an engine failure; their ship, as being closest to the Sea Star, was sent to the aid of the Italian Coast Guard.
The activists of Generation Identity themselves tweeted that the Sea Star engine had stopped due to minor technical problems, and stressed that the ship was not in distress.
to Sea-Eye It was later reported that Generation Identity activists had refused help over the radio.
According to the UN, in 2016, more than 5,000 refugees who traveled to Europe from Africa died in the Mediterranean Sea.
Generation Identity activists oppose migration to Europe and claim that non-governmental organizations that rescue refugees in the Mediterranean are actually involved in human smuggling.
In 2017, they announced a fundraiser for the Defend Europe campaign to send ships to the coast of Libya. There, the activists intend to "document the actions of NGOs, expose their cooperation with smugglers and intervene if they do something illegal." Activists intend to pick up refugees in distress, in their own words, and return them to Africa.
According to Buzzfeed, Generation Identity rented Sea Star in July. The ship set off from the state of Djibouti in East Africa to the Mediterranean Sea and was detained in the Suez Canal along the way. Then the captain of the Sea Star was detained in Cyprus on suspicion of human smuggling.
