The court extended the arrest of human rights activist Nagavkin. He has been on a hunger strike for seven days in a pre-trial detention center.

The Cheryomushkinsky District Court of Moscow on Tuesday extended the arrest of human rights activist Igor Nagavkin until September 16, 2017. In addition, Nagavkin has been on an indefinite hunger strike since August 8 in the Butyrka pre-trial detention center. The Caucasian Knot publication writes about this.

According to the publication, the hearing in the case began almost seven hours later than planned, due to the busyness of the investigator and the congestion of the courts.

Nagavkin's lawyer Farit Murtazin believes that "pressure is being put on his client in order to force him to give up his public activities."

“According to the case file, Nagavkin, a resident of the Volgograd region, was detained in connection with an attempted theft in the Volgograd region. The victim is also a resident of the Volgograd region. Accordingly, the case should have been investigated in the Volgograd region and should have been referred for consideration to the court, also in the Volgograd region, according to the principle of territoriality," the lawyer said in a conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

In addition, Murtazin noted that his client could not have been taken into custody, since the crime imputed to him is of medium gravity.

“Nagavkin was a prominent public figure in such a small town as Kalach-on-Don. And he became, in the end, inconvenient for everyone. He had a conflict with the mayor of the city, with the head of the traffic police, the prosecutor's office, he caused general irritation among the authorities. But, most importantly, for many years he fought against the distribution of drugs in the city of Kalach-on-Don, and said that the security forces were distributing drugs, ”Lev Ponomarev, director of the all-Russian movement For Human Rights, commented to the Caucasian Knot on the situation around the case.

The human rights activist was detained on September 29, 2016 in the city of Kalach-on-Don. Nagavkin is accused of attempted theft. Human rights activists believe that the reason for the persecution was the professional activities of Nagavkin. He himself believes that they were interested in him in connection with attempts to expose the drug mafia in law enforcement agencies.
