At a festival in Japan, the group pranked the audience by playing a rock version of “Never Gonna Give You Up” instead of the Nirvana hit.
On August 20, Foo Fighters performed at the Summersonic festival in Tokyo. During the concert, frontman Dave Grohl invited Rick Astley on stage, saying that he “met him a couple of minutes ago.” Rolling Stone noted that Foo Fighters then began playing an intro similar to Nirvana's hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (Grohl was Nirvana's drummer).
However, the loss was quickly replaced by a rock version of the meme song “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Astley.
In 2017, the song turned 30 years old, and “Rickroll” turned ten years old.
