The court extended the term of house arrest for mathematician Dmitry Bogatov

The Presnensky District Court of Moscow extended the house arrest of mathematics teacher Dmitry Bogatov for a month and seven days, a Mediazona correspondent reports from the courtroom.

The investigator asked to extend Bogatov’s period of detention under house arrest by one month and seven days, because it was necessary to obtain expert opinions, answers to inquiries and other data. The defense objected to house arrest because the deadline for completing the examination is still unknown; It is unclear how Bogatov can counteract its results.

Bogatov was detained on April 6, that is, the period of detention was extended to exactly six months. Bogatov came to the court hearing wearing a T-shirt with the Tor network logo . During the hearing, the judge removed the programmer’s mother from the courtroom for laughing at the phrase that Bogatov “has no source of legal income.”

On July 24, the court granted the investigation’s request to transfer Bogatov from the pre-trial detention center to house arrest and set the preventive measure until August 31. Under house arrest, Bogatov cannot leave his apartment without the permission of the investigator and cannot use any means of communication.

Bogatov, a mathematics teacher at the Moscow Faculty of Law and Law, a programmer and free software activist, was detained in April. According to investigators, the mathematician published on the SysAdmins.ru forum under the pseudonym “Ayrat Bashirov” calls for mass unrest at the “April 2 protests” in Moscow.

Bogatov’s defense insists that the accused is the operator of a Tor from his IP exit node, so any network user can publish messages address. Bogatov’s lawyers also presented a letter from the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications, where they confirmed that the IP address does not prove that the message was sent by a specific user.

The Memorial human rights center recognized Bogatov as a political prisoner. The mathematician was supported by Edward Snowden , the developers of the Tor Project operating system distribution and the Debian Linux , and the human rights organizations Electronic Frontier Foundation and Access Now. Students and teachers of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University collected one and a half thousand signatures in support of Bogatov and transferred them to the presidential administration, but the resonance did not affect the course of the investigation and the trial.
