German tennis player, world number six Angelique Kerber lost in the first round of the US Open to 19-year-old Japanese Naomi Osaka. Kerber won the tournament last year.
The match ended with the score 6:3, 6:1.
For Osaka, which is ranked 45th in the Women's Tennis Association rankings, this is the first victory over an opponent from the top ten.
Kerber became the first in 12 years and the second ever US Open champion to be eliminated in the first round the following year. In 2005, this happened to Russian woman Svetlana Kuznetsova.
It is reported that after the loss, Kerber will fly out of the top ten rankings.
