Auschwitz is released from the court due to health problems

The 96-year-old German was accused of murdering 3681 people in 1944.

The German prosecutor’s office appealed to the court with a proposal to terminate the court of a 96-year-old doctor from Auschwitz Gubert Zafke. The court also announced the need to close the case because of the health problems of a German who was accused of murdering 3681 people of a concentration camp in 1944.

According to prosecutors, repeated medical tests in March and July 2017 showed that Zafka suffers from dementia and was recognized as “unsuitable for the court”. The press service of the court explained that "the defendant cannot reasonably present his interests and testify."

The German lawyer spoke about the high blood pressure and suicidal thoughts in the client. The prosecutors filed a motion to terminate the trial, the plaintiffs agreed with him, among whom the sons of a woman killed in Auschwitz.

Zafka served in the Aushvitz-Birkenau concentration camp in the summer of 1944, he worked as a doctor for about two months. In previous processes, the German denied his guilt and said that he treated the wounded and officers. He also claimed that he did not know about torture and gas chambers. The prosecution, on the contrary, claimed that Zafka participated in the unit responsible for the cells, and also took blood from the women-muddy.
