Mathematician Dmitry Bogatov appealed his arrest to the ECHR

The lawyer of Dmitry Bogatov, a mathematician arrested for inciting riots, filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). about this with reference to the lawyer Alexei Liptser. writes Mediazona

The lawyer claims that Russia wrongfully detained the mathematician and deprived him of his liberty (Article 5 of the Convention). On July 24, the mathematician was transferred from the pre-trial detention center to house arrest, and on August 29, the court extended house arrest until early October.

Bogatov is accused of inciting mass riots because of calls to go to Red Square on April 2, 2017, which were posted by someone under the pseudonym "Ayrat Bashirov" on the SysAdmins.ru forum. The calls were sent from Bogatov's IP, but Bogatov is the exit node operator of the Tor network, which means that any user could write from his IP.

After Bogatov was charged with inciting mass riots in April, the court, contrary to the requirements of the investigation, did not take him into custody. Then two more articles were added to him - about calls to carry out terrorist activities or justify terrorism using the Internet and about preparing to organize mass riots, after which he was sent to a pre-trial detention center.
