A Volgograd human rights activist accused of theft had his detention extended

The Cheryomushkinsky District Court of Moscow extended until September 28 the detention of Igor Nagavkin, a human rights activist from the Volgograd Region, accused of theft. This was reported on September 16 by the "Caucasian Knot".

The meeting was held in the absence of both lawyers representing the interests of Nagavkin by agreement, the publication reports. The meeting was attended by the state lawyer.

Earlier, Nagavkin announced that on September 17, due to his state of health, he would end the hunger strike he was holding, demanding an impartial consideration of his case.

Nagavkin was previously held in custody in the Volgograd region. However, on April 10, he was transferred to the Butyrka pre-trial detention center in Moscow, since the case of the theft of jewelry was combined with the murder case in 1993, the defendant in which is a man whom the investigation considers Nagavkin's accomplice in the theft case. According to investigators, Nagavkin was also an accomplice in the murder case. Nagavkin does not admit guilt.

According to lawyer Valery Shukhardin, to whom the "Caucasian Knot" refers, Nagavkin should begin to familiarize himself with the case materials. The investigation into the case was completed on September 5, but the lawyers announced procedural violations.

Previously, Nagavkin was a prominent public figure in the city of Kalach-on-Don and repeatedly came into conflict with representatives of local authorities, including security forces.
