290 years ago, on September 19, 1727, the Generalissimo and the Serene Prince Alexander Menshikov, the favorite of Peter I and the actual ruler of the state under Catherine I, was deprived of all ranks, awards and property and sent to exile by decree of Emperor Peter II. He was subjected to the square according to the results of the work of the Investigative Commission of the Supreme Privy Council, which discovered huge financial abuses behind Menshikov. The disgrace of Menshikov was facilitated by his enemies of the princes Dolgoruky.

Initially, the place of exile was the Ranenburg fortress in the current Lipetsk region, and later - the town of Berezov of the Tobolsk province, where Menshikov died in November 1729.
